Dry January – is it worth it?

Of course it is! Quitting the booze for a month not only gives your liver a well-earned rest after Christmas, it has huge benefits for your dental health too. Here’s how.

Tooth decay & tooth erosion
Alcohol is high in acid and sugar, the two main contributors to tooth decay. Add fizzy drinks or fruit juice into the mix and you have a pretty lethal cocktail when it comes to your dental enamel, the shield that protects teeth from cavities and staining. And that’s not all – alcohol reduces saliva too, which is needed to neutralise the acid in your mouth. That ‘dry mouth’ feeling after a night out is a major indicator that your teeth are vulnerable to erosion and decay.

Mouth cancer
Excessive drinking is a major cause of mouth cancer – statistics show that heavy drinkers are four times more at risk than non-drinkers. And while most of us wouldn’t consider ourselves to be a heavy drinker, not everyone is aware of the impact of combining smoking with drinking. If you smoke as well as drink alcohol, you’re 30 times more at risk of getting mouth cancer. Taking a month off alcohol with Dry January will help get you into the habit of not drinking every night, and make it easier to stick to a healthier outlook in future.

We all know red wine is a major culprit when it comes to stained teeth – but while those dark surface stains that appear over an evening of red-wine drinking can be mostly brushed away, the greater damage is less obvious. Any form of alcohol – white and sparkling wines, beer and even clear spirits – will attack your tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to deep staining. Dry January will give your teeth a rest from alcohol – plus, there’s no better time to treat yourself to a teeth-whitening session!

Tips for making it through the month
1. Get the app. The Dry January & Beyond app tracks your progress each day, showing how much money and calories you’ve saved and offering motivational support and links to useful articles.
2. Visit your hygienist. A confidence-boosting scale and polish will motivate you to keep your teeth healthy and stain-free. Plus you’ll get lots of advice to help with any lifestyle changes you want to make – from getting through Dry January to stopping smoking and eating mindfully.

3. Distract yourself with a new hobby. Chances are your head is clearer and you’re sleeping better if you’re doing Dry January – so there’s no better time to try something new.

4. Treats! You’ll have saved a lot of money doing Dry January – so why not reward yourself with the smile you’ve always wanted? From bespoke teeth whitening to dental implants and facial aesthetics, you can access a comprehensive range of cosmetic treatments with Rhiwbina Dental – and our 0% finance options make it even easier.

What does January mean to you?

The New Year is under way, but there are still a lot of dark winter days to get through – which makes January the perfect month to give yourself the time to look back on last year and consider your priorities for the months ahead. And there’s no greater priority than your own wellbeing – something we at Rhiwbina Dental can help with.

Time to reflect
Did 2017 go completely as planned? Chances are a few curve balls were thrown your way, and they may have led to stress, tiredness, anxiety and other health issues. Redress the balance this year by taking control of your health. And believe it or not, good health begins with good dental health.

There’s a proven link between oral health and general health, with studies showing a connection between poor oral hygiene and conditions such as heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and some cancers. There’s still much more research to be done – but in the meantime, we should all be focusing on getting our mouths, teeth and gums in top condition.

3 ways to get on top of your dental health:

  • Brush for two minutes, twice a day, and floss once daily
  • Don’t miss your dental check-ups – they’re key to eliminating the little problems before they grow into something much harder to manage
  • Schedule your hygiene appointments – a regular scale and polish will control plaque and tartar, and leave you with a confidence-boosting smile. Your hygienist can also help with new challenges such as Dry January, stopping smoking and healthy eating.

Time to change
If you’re challenging yourself this year – perhaps with a health kick, learning a new skill or simply sticking to a regime that promotes a healthier lifestyle – you might find the journey whole lot easier if there’s a reward at the end of it. Instead of treating yourself with the very vice you’ve successfully given up, why not think about giving yourself a treat with long-term benefits?

3 alternative ways to reward yourself:

  • Dental implants. Permanently replace missing teeth with an option that lets you eat and speak with total confidence, prevents facial sagging and boosts quality of life.
  • Teeth whitening. If you’ve given up the booze and cut back on sugar this January, professional whitening to remove the evidence of past bad habits is the ultimate reward – and your new healthy regime will help keep that new sparkle for longer.
  • Adult braces. It’s never too late to fix a crooked smile – and with the new generation of discreet systems that work super-fast, you really can get a smile to be proud of this year.

Don’t forget, at Rhiwbina we offer 0% finance on many of our treatments, so they’re something you can consider even this soon after Christmas! Get in touch with us today and together we can make 2018 a year of good health and wellbeing.

Ideal for… anyone with missing teeth, or teeth requiring extraction because of damage or decay.
Choose them because… they offer a lifelike and permanent solution that combines full tooth function with excellent aesthetics. Plus, they support the jaw, so you won’t experience the facial sagging missing teeth cause.
They work by… replacing your tooth root with a strong titanium plug, around which the jaw bone grows and onto which a prosthetic tooth can be fixed. Surgery is minimally invasive and results will last a lifetime.
Any drawbacks? Dental implants are an expensive option – but they should never need replacing if you follow a good oral hygiene routine.

Ideal for… creating a perfect set of front teeth with bespoke, eggshell-thin layers of porcelain
Choose them because… veneers are a one-treatment solution for host of dental issues, covering up chips, cracks and gaps, and hiding crooked or discoloured teeth.
They work by… creating the impression of a perfect set of teeth. Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a dental lab and then bonded in place by your dentist, who will fine-tune them by hand to create the finished result.
Any drawbacks? The treatment is not reversible: to fit veneers, the dentist has to remove a thin layer of enamel from your existing teeth – so it really pays to choose an experienced practice like Rhiwbina to carry out veneers with brilliant results.

Ideal for… healthy teeth that have yellowed through age, diet or lifestyle habits.
Choose them because… your teeth and gums are in good condition but their colour is letting them down. At Rhiwbina we offer prescription teeth whitening that you can carry out at home using bespoke whitening trays.
It works by… gently whitening teeth with a prescription-only bleaching gel. Your dentist will prescribe the right strength of gel for your needs, while your made-to-measure whitening trays accurately target your teeth, preventing the gel from touching your gums.
Any drawbacks? If you want your whitening results to last, you’ll need to try and avoid staining foods and drinks, and give up smoking.
